Winneburg is the capital of the duchy of Winneburg. It consists of a city and a castle.[1]

In 1267, at the beginning of the Second Northern War, the duke led a company from Winneburg to Cintra, and then Aedirn.[1]
In 1301, during the reign of Imperator Morvran Voorhis, Peter Evertsen, the imperial treasurer, who had been falsely accused of abuse of power, convicted, and imprisoned at Winneburg Castle, was executed by hanging.[1]
