The Family Blade is one of the secondary quests available on Skellige during The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Summary Edit

The quest starts as the witcher picks up a notice called "Stolen Sword" in the Kaer Trolde Harbor notice board. The lead guard Olaf of Kaer Trolde armory wrote a missive regarding theft of a sword named "Kuliu" which is the ancestral steel sword of Clan An Craite. Only known piece of the information is that the thief was last seen heading south.

Geralt heads southeast of Kaer Trolde near southwest of the Miners' Camp signpost to an obelisk set atop a cliff. Near the obelisk, the witcher finds a camp of 4 thieves (3 Level 15 Renegades and a Level 15 Skelliger) huddled around a campfire. After dispatching the thieves, Geralt finds a Thief's journal among the dead thieves. The journal talks about how a deal will be struck with a merchant at the old fortress near Fyresdal regarding the sword. Geralt travels to Fort Grymmdjarr southwest of Fyresdal and meets yet again 4 thieves (2 level 15 Renegades, a level 14 Renegade, and a level 15 Skelliger) encamped inside next to a harpy nest. After yet again taking down the thieves, one of them will have another Thief's journal. The journal discusses how the thieves with the merchant brought the sword to Madman Lugos. The jarl refused their offer and sent them away as thieves. The merchant was caught but the thieves managed to escape with the sword. They then made their next plan to meet up with the thief's brother-in-law at the whale cemetery to sell the sword in Novigrad. The witcher travels to the Whale Graveyard north of Redgill and discovers the thief's brother making the transfer to 3 other thieves. Geralt quickly dispatches the 4 thieves (2 level 15 Renegades, a level 14 Renegade, and a level 15 Skelliger) and loots the sword, Kuliu, and another Thief's journal from their bodies. The journal writes about how the thief's brother wishes to give up on selling the sword after waiting for a while around the whale graveyard. Now that the witcher has taken back Kuliu, the ancestral sword of Clan An Craite, Geralt heads back to the guardsman, Olaf, at the bridge toward Kaer Trolde Keep. Geralt tells him he found it at the whale cemetery. Olaf thanks the witcher with 20 Oren3 for if the sword were not found, the guardsman would have had to pay with his blood.

Journal Entry Edit

Skelligers value three things above all else: honor, the memory of their ancestors and sturdy weapons. That is why Crach an Craite flew into a fury when he found out someone had stolen his family blade, Kuliu, from the Kaer Trolde treasure room. The infuriated jarl promised a fat bounty to whoever could find his lost sword and punish the thief.
