Stranger in a Strange Land is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Prerequisite: this quest can only be started by completing Contract: The Phantom of Eldberg between The King is Dead – Long Live the King and King's Gambit.

Walkthrough[]

After finishing the Contract: The Phantom of Eldberg and receiving payment from Jorund in the inn at Arinbjorn, Geralt is forced again to face Kori and Kraki with the help of Jorund, but this time in a fistfight.

No matter what you do, Geralt gets knocked out and before you can recover, Kori and Kraki draw swords and Jorund is lethally wounded. You need to finish them off then, after which Geralt goes to check on Jorund, but the only thing he can do is hear the man's last words. As you leave the tavern afterwards, Geralt is confronted by Leif - Kori and Kraki's father. You can argue for a bit, but are eventually taken to be judged by Madman Lugos and end up in his prison at Kaer Muire. (50XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level)

When the scripted events and cutscenes end, you have the objective to get out of prison. If you talk to the guard by interacting with the grate door, you can learn that Geralt can stay quite awhile here, which is obviously not an acceptable option for him. Luckily, in the same conversation you have the immediate option to use Axii (requires Delusion level 3 for a minimum of 40XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) on the guy, and that is enough to take you to Lugos. However, there are two more options.

If you just walk around the place, a man at the bottom end of the prison, Simun Brambling, will draw your attention and offer to help by cashing in a favor the guard owes him. The only catch is, Geralt will then owe him a favor instead. If you accept, all you have to do is what Simun says - talk to the guard.

Note: Accepting help from Simun Brambling will unlock the secondary quest An Unpaid Debt after The Cave of Dreams is completed.

The least obvious option is to attack one of the prisoners, which starts a fistfight with all four of them, although Simun will stay back if you keep your distance from him. It's not a very hard fight as you can consume equipped food and potions, as well as use signs. Once you beat them all up, the guard will be impressed that such a strong guy is being wasted for slave labor in the prison and takes you for a fast trial.

Regardless of how, you walk in for your trial as Leif is advocating for a harsh judgement in front of Madman Lugos. It makes no difference what you say here - the jarl sentences Geralt to death unless he can buy his freedom with a ridiculous amount of silver, but then declares that he will himself pay the blood price for you. This is obvious theater by the Madman, but the reason why depends on whether you've completed another secondary quest yet.

If you haven't, he's putting Geralt in debt of honor and wants you to help his son "Blueboy" Lugos in his venture to The Cave of Dreams, starting the quest. If you have, he's simply repaying you for that. The quest then completes and 80XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level is awarded.

Journal entry[]

The common folk rarely show witchers the gratitude they deserve for practicing their dangerous trade. Arinbjorn, however, proved an even more ungrateful place than usual in this regard. After taking care of a wraith plaguing this village, Geralt stepped into the local tavern in search of a well-earned drink. Before he could even take a sip, however, two trouble-seeking youths started harassing him. Geralt usually strives to avoid bloodshed in such situations... but this time he had no choice.
Though Geralt had killed his attackers in self-defense, no witnesses confirmed this and he was charged with starting the brawl. The inhabitants of Arinbjorn urged Geralt to put down his weapons and hand himself over to the jarl, Madman Lugos. Wanting no more blood on his hands that day, Geralt reluctantly delivered himself to the justice of a lunatic.

If Geralt hasn't been to The Cave of Dreams:

Geralt stood before Madman Lugos to be tried. The jarl found him guilty, but then immediately paid his blood price for him, thus giving him his freedom. Like most favors, however, this one was given with the expectation of gaining something in return. For saving his life and granting him his freedom, Lugos wanted Geralt to help his son and heir, Blueboy Lugos, in his trek through the mysterious Cave of Dreams.

If Geralt already was in The Cave of Dreams:

Geralt stood before Madman Lugos to be tried. The jarl found him guilty, but then immediately paid his blood price for him, thus giving him his freedom. In this way Lugos repaid the witcher for the help he had given his son in the Cave of Dreams.
