Pale Widow (scientifically, gray scolopendromorphs[1]) is a special type of giant centipede that lives in underground lairs. They are first introduced in the Blood and Wine expansion.

Bestiary entry[]

Never have I seen such a creature! It was like a giant centipede, but white, utterly white!
– Account of Doctor Vittorius de la Vega after the first encounter with the Pale Widow
This rare variety of giant centipede dwells in underground lairs and owes its name to its unusual, pale white coloring. Like the more common giant centipede, its body is covered in hard chitinous armor, with numerous hooked limbs sticking out from underneath. Some scholars raise these creatures in laboratory conditions for the properties of their albumen, which makes an excellent base for the brewing of mutagenic potions.

Combat tactics[]

The Pale Widow isn't particularly strong, but its a tricky foe to fight, really very good at moving about the area and trying to do quick attacks, so keeping a Quen Sign or Yrden sign up, while constantly moving is your best bet. And as Pale Widow is variety of insectoid, than worth of try could be Insectoid oil.

It will spit acid at you so it is best to try and dodge it, it will shoot AT MOST 3 shots before going back underground to relocate. Golden Oriole is also effective against this attack.

After hitting the Pale Widow three times fall back for you can no longer do damage, and it curls up before doing a retaliation strike that has decent range.

There is a way to get many hits in a row. The centipede will frequently emerge from below Geralt - place Yrden when it is underground and move at the last moment to trap it. Be aware that its dark back armor is very tough, so aim for its pale belly when it is trapped.
