Mutual of Beauclair's Wild Kingdom is a secondary quest in the Blood and Wine expansion. It is started by picking up a contract from the The Cockatrice Inn notice board:

Contract for a Witcher/Witchers: Caravan Escort
To a witcher or witchers:
The Beauclair Coopers' Guild is seeking an individual or individuals willing to escort a merchant convoy through an area threatened by the "Great White Terror." More information can be obtained from Gaston Legaff at the merchants' camp in the forests to the north of Coronata vineyard.
Maugrim Poullain, Undersecretary for Threats and Risk Management, Beauclair Coopers' Guild.

Walkthrough[]

Head towards the campsite mentioned in the contract, at the Trading Post northeast of Coronata Vineyard. When you arrive, the place is in complete disarray and there are blood splatters everywhere - no lack of clues to examine, so get to work. Once you examine a few of them, Geralt will conclude that the merchants were attacked by a basilisk, but not any variety that he knows, at which point a man arrives galloping on his horse.

Geralt warns the man of the danger, but it turns out that he is actually looking after the basilisk and is very proud about it. Talk to him a bit more - he'll present himself as Count Borhis di Salvaress and will add a lot of details, but most importantly that the "Great White Terror" is a last of its kind Silver Basilisk named Iocaste. However, he doesn't want it killed and refuses to tell you where to find it, so you're back to examining tracks.

Borhis will comment as you examine the clues, even those you already did before his arrival, but there is a new one that allows you to progress - smashed barrels of tannin. You then have a scent to follow into the woods, where it eventually disperses near some blood stains that will lead you to a corpse. Examine the body and pick up a letter from the body if you wish to know more details about the story, but it's not important for the quest to proceed.

While on your way to the body, the scent became perceptible again (although the effect is hard to see in daylight) and eventually leads you near a road along Venin Rocks, where Geralt hears human voices nearby. Approach to meet a group of Crinfrid Reavers preparing to take on Iocaste. Regardless of what you say, one of them will recognize you and they'll be glad to share the bounty on the basilisk with you. However, Count di Salvaress appears again and promises to match the fee himself in exchange for letting Iocaste live. The reavers only care about the gold and don't mind either way, so it's your call and you have a timed choice to make.

Spare Iocaste[]

Important: This choice will count as "Proof of Compassion" for There Can Be Only One.

If you decide to spare the basilisk, the Count pays the promised bribe and you get your share of 350 Oren3. (200XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) The reavers leave happy, while Borhis offers you an extra reward, which you can accept (50 Oren3 + 50XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) or decline. The quest completes and the Count remains hopeful that Iocaste may produce crossbreed offspring yet.

Important: Declining the extra coin will count as "Proof of Generosity" for There Can Be Only One.

Kill Iocaste[]

Important: This choice will count as "Proof of Valor" for There Can Be Only One.

If you want to kill the basilisk, the reavers will ask whether you want them to help from range with their crossbows or use their weapons up close. It being an aerial creature, the crossbows choice is probably the more convenient one, but regardless of your choice some time passes and combat begins. If you didn't examine enough clues before, you may lack some of this in the bestiary - Iocaste is weak to Draconid oil, Aard, Igni and Golden Oriole, which protects you from her venom.

After she is dead, the reavers are very glad to have had your help and reward you with 400 Oren3 as the quest completes. (200XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) The Count is heartbroken, but you get to loot the corpse for Silver basilisk trophy and Squire's steel sword.

Journal entry[]

While wandering around Toussaint, Geralt did not neglect his vocation and the true core of his existence, namely, pursuing and slaying monsters. Having found a notice on a notice board, posted by a merchant guild beset by some beast, the witcher decided to go to the appointed spot to learn about the details of the matter.
At his destination, Geralt found a ransacked camp. It looked as if it had been destroyed recently. He also happened on the bodies of two merchants. Their wounds had clearly been caused by a monster of ample size. While combing the surrounding area, the witcher happened on Count Borhis di Salvaress, who claimed the monster Geralt was tracking was a silver basilisk - the last surviving specimen of the subspecies which also happened to be the Count's wildlife roaming pet, a pet the nobleman desperately wished the witcher would spare. To make matters worse, it turned out the basilisk was also the quarry of a small company of Crinfrid Reavers.
While tracking the basilisk, Geralt found yet another corpse. As things stood, it seemed a band of crinfrid reavers was also hunting the basilisk. They had taken on a contract from a local guild and in there arrogance collected the fee in advance. Yet the mercenaries somehow took an immediate liking to Geralt, which I find hard to believe, as I am quite familiar with their type... They offered to join forces with the Witcher in fighting the beast and promised to share their reward with him once it was brought down.
If Geralt spares the basilisk:
Geralt decided he would not slay the basilisk. The count in turn pledged to take more precautions toward safeguarding merchants passing through his pet's feeding range. He also promised that Geralt would acquire ingredients at special prices from herbalists he knew.
If Geralt kills the basilisk:
Geralt decided that the basilisk had to die. It mattered little that it might have been the last of it's subspecies, for fundamentally it remained a dangerous beast. Count di Salvaress was distraught. He threatened that the Witcher would never see another reasonable price at the shops of the herbalists he knew.

Objectives[]

  • Meet the merchants at the camp.
  • Using your Witcher Senses, investigate the campsite.
  • Find out more about the second victim.
  • Use your Witcher Senses to follow the basilisk.
  • use your Witcher Senses to follow the sounds.
  • Find the basilisk's lair.
  • If you choose to kill the basilisk
    • Kill the basilisk with the Reaver's help.

Notes[]

  • Depending on your choice, a few things can be observed later:
    • You can see notices with Geralt's face, from either the Coopers' Guild or Count Borhis, asking merchants to raise their prices for you. However, since another party (Borhis or the Crinfrid Reavers respectively) had also promised you to put in a good word, nothing changes in practice.
    • At Coronata, on the edge of the small pond there, either a Vineyard worker's letter or an Unsent vineyard worker's letter will appear.
    • If you spared Iocaste, Borhis will set up a roadblock north of Coronata Vineyard to dissuade people from entering Iocaste's territory. Following the road north from there, the Count can be seen observing Iocaste, remarking that the color on her back has changed, indicating she may be getting ready for the mating season. Iocaste can be seen flying high in the air, though she cannot be interacted with.
    • If you killed Iocaste:
      • You can return to Venin Rocks later and see Borhis, who has buried Iocaste under a tree near her nest and is mourning her death. Her grave appears shortly, but it may take a few more days before the Count appears there.
      • At the Trading Post you can at first see workers doing repairs, and a few days after the place is restored and business is booming.
      • A Bandit's unsent letter found in a bandit camp west of the Trading Post changes its contents. Even if it was looted before that, a new updated copy will appear there.
