Gwent: Playing Thaler is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Note: This quest will fail if Thaler dies during Reason of State.

The XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level rewarded in this quest is unaffected by the ±5 level constraint and difficulty level.

Walkthrough[]

Note: This quest is only available if Vernon Roche was played prior to completing A Deadly Plot, as he is unable to direct you to Thaler. However, if A Deadly Plot was completed prior to playing Roche, then Thaler will be played as part of Gwent: Old Pals, while this quest will be skipped.

The quest is added right after A Deadly Plot ends, and you can play Thaler right then and there. However, if you leave the area then Thaler will move to the Seven Cats Inn and you will have to meet him there for the match. Once you beat him you will earn 25XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level and the powerful Geralt of Rivia card.

Journal entry[]

Bernard Dukat, a.k.a. Thaler, was a truly great gwent player. What makes a gwent player great, you ask? Equal parts cunning and good cards, I reply. These last Geralt wanted for himself, for he felt his own collection was somewhat lacking.
As you might have guessed, Geralt managed to acquire Thaler's best card.

Objectives[]

Notes[]

  • If you wish to have this quest, but A Deadly Plot is already started, you may have trouble playing Roche as he will be at the Passiflora (even though the quest marker may show him at the Temerian Partisan Hideout) and while there he won't talk to you about anything but the plot. It is safe to just have the meeting at the brothel and look for him in the partisan camp afterwards, just as long as you haven't met Thaler yet.
