Child of the Elder Blood is a main quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and a subquest necessary to complete for Battle Preparations.

The quest is started when you talk to Yennefer after learning the location of The Sunstone.

Walkthrough[]

Go to The Pali Gap Coast and enter the cave entrance there. If you don't already have it, the signpost will be conveniently unlocked when the quest starts. When you talk to her or Ciri, Yennefer will attempt to unlock the entrance which will awaken one of the two golems standing guard. After it's dead Yennefer will finish opening the door and you may enter.

As you start to explore, a cutscene will trigger and you'll be commenting on some sketches of Ciri before you're able to do anything else. You can examine a few things, but nothing important is missable. There are only four things of note in the first room:

  • A pile of cookies on the table to the right of the table with the sketches of Ciri/Lara. Geralt will remark on them, but their discovery won't affect anything.
  • A note called Caranthir's Progress can be found in the small bookshelf next to the entrance doorway. Note: Prior to Patch 4.0, the item is invisible and doesn't glow while using witcher senses. Instead, the option to loot the bookshelf should appear when you are standing directly next to it.
  • Yennefer will draw your attention to a table with some distillates and herbs, indicating that someone was just there.
  • Fourth is a hairbrush on a table in the hallway leading to the next room. Like the cookies, finding it will not affect anything.

Entering the next room starts a cutscene in which Geralt, Ciri, and Yen examine Lara Dorren's complete genealogy and Avallac'h's notes. After the cutscene, you may loot Remarks Concerning the Death of Auberon from the right side of the long table underneath Lara's genealogy. Note: Prior to Patch 4.0, the document is invisible and isn't revealed by witcher senses, but still lootable if Geralt stands in front of it.

There is a mirror and a container of perfume that can be examined, but they aren't necessary.

After that you will reach a door and Yennefer will remark that someone is on the other side. Enter to find a female Aen Elle, who will insult Ciri and claim that Avallac'h secretly hates her. When you leave the elf's room, there will be a timed dialogue option with Ciri:

  1. Calm down.
  2. Go for it.

Important: This decision will count towards deciding Ciri's fate at the end of the game. The first option contributes towards a negative ending, while the second contributes towards a positive ending.

If you pick the latter Geralt and Ciri will wreck the place, allowing her to blow off the steam. If you told her to calm down, as it usually happens, this doesn't work and Geralt will find and put on her a necklace that belonged to Lara Dorren. Afterwards, you can go back to the room you found the Aen Elle woman in and loot the book Tales and Legends About Humans.

Ciri will go outside and you have to go talk to her, but note that the next cutscene only triggers if you walk past her and it can be confusing if you try to interact with her instead. You will then talk about Skjall and you will have another timed dialogue choice when Ciri ask you to go visit his grave on Hindarsfjall:

  1. Yeah. I'll go with you.
  2. No time.

Important: This decision also counts towards deciding Ciri's fate at the end of the game. The first option contributes towards a positive ending, while the second contributes towards a negative ending.

Choosing to go with Ciri will start Skjall's Grave and you can choose to go immediately or meet her there later, but that quest is practically just one big cutscene, so it's usually better to just save some time and go. If you refuse to go with her, Ciri will be very upset and Geralt can only watch her as he realizes his mistake.

The quest then completes and you receive 300XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level.

Journal entry[]

Ciri pulled Geralt aside for a confidential heart-to-heart. She confided to him that Avallac'h had a hidden lair, a secret place that not even Ciri, his star pupil and long-time traveling companion, had been allowed to visit. Intrigued, Geralt decided to enter this secret lair and find out what the Seer was hiding.
The most important part of any conspiracy is for the co-conspirators to trust each other fully, and Ciri's revelation had cast a shadow of suspicion on Avallac'h. Geralt knew light must be shed on this shadow before it proved too late.
It turned out Avallac'h's well-guarded secret was a hidden laboratory in which he carried out research on Lara Dorren's gene - the gene Ciri bore within her, the cause of her power and her misfortune. Ciri was understandably less than thrilled to see herself through Avallac'h's eyes as a subject in some twisted experiment.
Meanwhile, they also discovered this secret research wasn't the only reason the Seer kept the place hidden. Avallac'h seemed to have been using it as a pleasure alcove for trysts with his elven lover. Who would have thought? It turns out even the wisest of sages is not always driven by pure reason alone.

Objectives[]

  • Travel to the island where Avallac'h's laboratory is located.
  • Talk to Yennefer.
  • Wait for the door to open.
  • Neutralize the golem.
  • Explore Avallac'h's laboratory using your Witcher Senses.
  • Talk to Yennefer.
  • Talk to Ciri.
  • Search the laboratory using your Witcher Senses.
  • Meet Ciri outside the laboratory. (300XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level)

Notes[]

  • Two very strong hints of the consequence are shown if one tells Ciri to "Calm down." First, she will almost break the fourth wall by replying with "Aren't you supposed to cheer me up?". Afterwards, Geralt giving her Lara Dorren's necklace is an allusion to Lara's death amidst a blizzard while protecting her child.

Bugs[]

  • At the entrance Ciri has her sword and will help you fight the golem, but when you enter and start exploring it is no longer seen on her back.
