In Wolf's Clothing is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that is given by Freya priestesses at Lofoten or by Josta at the Temple of Freya on Hindarsfjall.

Contract: Morkvarg
Sons and daughters of Freya,
Another year has passed in which Morkvarg plagues our goddess' gardens. Whoever musters the courage to eliminate this evil will gain fame amongst mortals and the favor of the immortals, as well as a prize from the temple's vault.
–Sister Josta

Walkthrough[]

This quest can be picked up either through the main quests, Missing Persons and Nameless, or from the notice board at Larvik.

Once picked up, go talk to Josta at the nearby Temple of Freya, who informs you killing Morkvarg will be no ordinary feat: apparently he's been killed many times before only to keep coming back after each time. Undoubtedly, this signifies a powerful curse is in place. Inquiring further reveals it was allegedly cast by the late archpriestess Ulve, who, on her dying breath, cursed Morkvarg for all his foul deals, but in particular for attacking Freya's Garden, a sacred place. To learn more though you can talk with Einar, a pilgrim on that fateful day who happened to survive the events.

Head to Larvik's harbor to find him getting ready to set sail. He'll tell you how he remembered Ulve uttering the curse that transformed Morkvarg into a werewolf and proceeded to attack his men but couldn't devour any of them as they turned to ash in his mouth. Despite it all, Einar escaped, though a few things still seem off with his story.

If you haven't already, investigate the garden where you will have to deal with some wolves, although most of them can be skipped if you know where to go. Don't bother with the small house there yet, as the rooms inside are locked. You need to go to the southestern end of the sanctuary where you'll come across a body first, with a lone wolf guarding it, and then past that a small bridge followed by a ladder (built into the wall) to climb.

Find Morkvarg[]

There you'll find a mechanism with two levers, which opens floodgates in the small river below. You're supposed to use that and there will even be a cutscene if this is your first time seeing it, but not yet. This is also where the paths for this quest and Nameless split, in case you're doing them at the same time. Continue further ahead to find a cave and as you enter, a cutscene will trigger with Morkvarg talking to himself about a lost key.

At this point you can backtrack and go search for the key in question, but unless you really want to avoid a fight, it's better to attack him. If you do, once his health is cut down enough (somewhere between a quarter and almost dead), he'll fall and you can interact with him to start a conversation. He will plead with Geralt to lift the curse, promising a reward. Afterwards, you have the option to feed him, which is one of the ways to lift the curse, but if this is your first encounter, you wouldn't have the correct thing to feed him with yet. Finish him off, or leave him - either way he'll vanish, dropping regular werewolf loot, but also werewolf meat. While still in the cave, you can use Witcher Senses to examine a hole in the floor, adding another objective to find a flooded cave - this is where the lost key is.

Floodgates[]

Now, return to the floodgate mechanism found before the cave. One lever selects a gate and the other opens or closes it. Neither is strictly necessary to go though before the quest can be completed, but one unlocks more options, as well as treasures to loot.

The "left" gate, or straight ahead from the vantage point of the mechanism, will lead you into the other side of the garden that you can currently see, but has two doors to it locked (the wooden one on the opposite side of the sanctuary, and the grate one to your right). You are supposed to go there eventually, but it's better to get the key to the doors first. Note: it is possible to jump over this gate to get past it without ever using the mechanism.

The "right" gate will lead you to the flooded cave and lost key that Morkvarg was talking about. It unlocks both doors to the garden, as well as the rooms in the house near the sacred tree, where you dropped down from at the very start.

Trick the werewolf[]

If you wish to just get rid of the werewolf quickly, open the "left" gate and through it, after climbing into the garden, head east to the building with a broken down door. There are a few things to examine there, but the important one is a bloodied werewolf's leg on a chain. Once you interact with it, a small cutscene triggers with Morkvarg appearing and telling you how the curse doesn't allow him to die, making him always return from death.

He will ask if you wish to hear a story, and listening to it, if you're attentive, provides a hint for a flaw in the curse. Regardless though, you have to fight him eventually and then talk again when he falls down. Unless you ran away from him in the cave, you can now feed him his own flesh - the werewolf meat he dropped. If you haven't fought him before, just finish him off here and loot the werewolf meat, then go around into his cave lair to find him there a second time.

The curse doesn't allow for Morkvarg to eat his own flesh, so when he does, it ends with his life. You'll be awarded 50XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level, a non-relic Salmian brigandine and can go to Josta to get her reward as well. However, you miss on more rewards by getting rid of the werewolf this way, though you can still get hidden treasures by exploring the other route afterwards.

Lift the curse[]

Open the "right" gate and swim through the flooded tunnel until you reach the cave, right underneath Morkvarg's lair. Search the skeleton remains there to find a padlock key, exactly what you are looking for. With it, swim back through the flooded tunnel and head for the house near the sacred tree.

Once inside the house, unlock and search both rooms. The room on the right isn't necessary, but it has worthwhile loot. In the left one you'll find a chest with Morkvarg's journal and reading it will reveal that Einar lied to you and he was actually part of Morkvarg's crew, so it's time to confront him.

Return to the harbor near Larvik, and when you call Einar a liar you'll have two options: fight him and his mates, or calm him down and say you're only interested in lifting the curse. If you choose the peaceful route, he'll provide the necessary information - he was the one to curse Morkvarg to begin with, cutting him with a fang, which merely needs to be given to the werewolf in order to lift the curse. After this, you can demand the fang and have to fight for it, or convince him to part with it for priestesses. If you do the latter, he'll make one request: kill Morkvarg once the curse is lifted. Important: you will get the cursed fang no matter what, but without Einar's confession, Geralt doesn't have the knowledge to use it. Then the option to give it to Morkvarg won't appear when you meet again and you'll be left with no choice, but to feed him his own flesh (see previous section).

Head back to the garden and find Morkvarg again. If you haven't seen him inside the garden building yet (where the other option is revealed), you can trigger the scene there if you wish, but he'll always be back inside the cave after you've talked to Einar. No matter what, you'll need to cut him down again before you can talk, but this time you should have the choice to give him the cursed fang.

When you do, the curse is lifted and Morkvarg is human again. (80XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) He'll be quite excited for a moment, before you can either honor Einar's wish and fight again to kill him (85XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level), or ask for the reward he mentioned (80XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level), in which case he'll instruct you to find the Loan Shark in Novigrad. Note: asking for his reward is the more profitable option in every way, and you can still attack and kill him as he leaves.

Collecting payment(s)[]

You will always get 50XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level and 85 Oren3 from Josta.

Unfortunately, Einar didn't promise and won't give anything for honoring his request, but if you asked Morkvarg for a reward after lifting the curse, go see the Loan Shark in The Bits for another 50XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level, Deithwen and (if you don't already have it) Torn-out page: Werewolf decoction.

When all promised rewards are collected, the quest will complete.

Journal entry[]

If quest is started from the notice board:
The Skellige Isles have a long and rich history. Scattered throughout their rocky lands are many mysterious ruins, elven relics, ancient woods, and natural marvels. One of the places that most stuck in Geralt's memory was the abandoned garden near Freya's temple. Geralt discovered it by accident, and found there was work waiting for him within - a powerful monster prowled inside its crumbling walls.
If quest is started through the main quest:
Ciri's trail had led Geralt and Yennefer to a derelict garden in Skellige. There they hoped to find the man called Craven, who alone could provide answers to their burning questions. Unfortunately, they were first greeted by an entirely different individual - a monster known as Morkvarg. It seemed Geralt once more would have to stain his silver sword with blood.
Freya's garden - once the pride of Hindarsfjall, nay, of all the Isles - had fallen into ruin. This had happened on account of a certain Morkvarg, a cruel pirate for whom nothing was sacred. The punishment for his deeds was a curse that transformed him into a monster and imprisoned him inside the garden walls. There he roamed for years until Freya's priestesses decided it was time to get rid of him for good. They promised a generous reward to any brave man who could drive him off - or, better yet, kill him.
If Geralt feeds Morkvarg his own meat:
Geralt decided to try an innovative curse-lifting method - feeding the werewolf his own flesh. Geralt's efforts were a partial success. The curse was lifted, but Morkvarg died without ever reassuming his human form. Considering the hideous deeds this cruel pirate had wrought, one's heart does not exactly burst with pity for him.
If Geralt lifts the curse with the fang and kills Morkvarg immediately:
Geralt tracked down one of Morkvarg's former companions who lived in Larvik. His jaw dropped to learn this man - and not, as was commonly thought, Freya's high priestess - had cast the curse on the infamous pirate. The man also possessed an object he claimed could lift the curse. Geralt took it from him, and used it to return Morkvarg the human form - thus rendering him mortal. Geralt then struck an expert blow to hasten the inevitable end this condition implied. Clearly he felt that years of insatiable hunger were not punishment for this man's many sins.
If Geralt lifts the curse with the fang and doesn't kill Morkvarg immediately:
Geralt tracked down one of Morkvarg's former companions who lived in Larvik. His jaw dropped to learn this man - and not, as was commonly thought, Freya's high priestess - had cast the curse on the infamous pirate. The man also possessed an object he claimed could lift the curse. Geralt took it from him, and used it to return Morkvarg the human form - and then let him go free. This might strike you as strange, dear reader, considering this former pirate's many sins and complete unwillingless to reform. Remember, however, that it is a witcher's job to kill monsters, not people, no matter how rotten they might be.

Notes[]

  • Either a bug or intentionally, if you don't kill Morkvarg right after asking about the reward, you won't be able to get the additional rewards from the Loan Shark.
  • The journal entry won't update if you strike Morkvarg down after lifting the curse, causing some odd comments from Skelligers.
  • If asked about the reward and then killed Morkvarg as he walks away, you'll have both journal entries for killing and not killing him.
  • There is a chance that the objective "Talk to the priestesses of Melitele to learn what happened in the garden" will not be able to be completed, and will stay as an objective even after talking to Josta. Luckily, this doesn't matter, as you can still complete the quest without an issue.
  • The werewolf meat stays in your inventory after the quest completes and cannot be dropped. The only way to remove them is on PC via the console command removeitem('sq201_werewolf_meat') (executed as many times as the amount you've looted).
  • During the quest you will also find Rotting flesh, which is different from the regular junk item with the same name, but not distinguishable until picked up. It goes into Food and Drink in the inventory, but cannot be consumed or sold. However, unlike the werewolf meat, it can be dropped on the ground, though it will remain there forever and show on the minimap. The only way to completely remove it is on PC via the console command removeitem('sq201_rotting_meat')
