The witchers' laboratory holds their most closely guarded secrets: mutagenic plants, hallucinogenic mushrooms, natural stimulants and potion ingredients. It is here that young apprentices, like Leo are subjected to the fabled Trial of the Grasses, which only a few survived.
It is this laboratory which is pillaged by the Salamandra organization, apparently led by a mysterious mage in the Prologue of the game. Leo meets his end at the hands of the Professor there and Triss Merigold is nearly killed defending the lab.
