Death By Fire is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Walkthrough[]

On the road west of Codgers' Quarry, you'll find a couple huts, with one of them on fire and several bandits outside, watching it, while someone cries for help inside. Approach and the bandits will tell you to "piss off". You can say there's a third option, which will instantly make them attack you, or say it's none of your concern. If you go with the latter, you can change your mind and attack once out of the conversation. If you leave though, the hut will eventually burn down and you'll get nothing.

If you attack the men, you can choose to use Aard now and unblock the door for the elf, who'll then run out and use her bow to aid you, or finish off the bandits first then help her out. Regardless, after all the bandits are dead, talk to her and she'll thank you, explaining that they wanted to rob her but when she refused to tell them where her gold was, they came back, barricaded her in, and set fire to the hut. As thanks, she'll tell you to check a tree stump just behind her house for your reward, earning 25 XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level. The stump is easy to find using your Witcher Senses and is located near one of the back corners of the hut and contains 20 Oren3. Note that if you don't talk to the elf, it'll treat it as if you passed by without saving her and the quest will fail instead.

Don't forget to loot the bandits' bodies, as one of them always drops Alder Folk boots.

Journal entry[]

Men can be terribly cruel, especially to those of different races. The witcher had seen humans persecute nonhumans far too often. This time he witnessed a particularly appalling scene - a group of thugs wanting to burn a she-elf alive.
Fortunately, the witcher managed to defeat the bandits and save the elf. Unfortunately, the witcher cannot be everywhere at once and not every victim of racial persecution can count on his help.

Objectives[]

  • Defeat the bandits.
  • If Geralt didn't let her out during the fight:
    • Clear the doorway and free the elf.
  • Talk to the survivor.

Notes[]

  • These bandits have a very specific set of drop loot. In addition to random junk and other less valuable (but still predetermined) items, one always drops Alder Folk boots and a Maribor sword of random quality, while another always drops mandrake root.

Bugs[]

  • There is sometimes a glitch where there is no option to talk to the she-elf once she has escaped the house. Saving and reloading helps resolve the issue.
