Enchanting in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is added by the Hearts of Stone expansion, and facilitated through the use of runewords (for weapons) and glyphwords (for armor). These can give significant bonuses to a piece of equipment, but would destroy any upgrades already set into it, and fill all upgrade slots on that armor/weapon, preventing the addition of new runes.
If you want them, Geralt must help the Runewright. You can find him and his apprentice near Upper Mill, north of Novigrad.
Some general notes on Enchanting:
- Runewords and Glyphwords can only be added to a sword or armor with 3 slots. Dulla can add more slots to any item for a fee up to set maximums; all swords can get up to 3 slots but only chest armor can get 3 slots so you will only ever be able to have one active Glyphword.
- A sword Runeword will only be active if that particular sword is drawn in combat, so if you like the effect of a particular Runeword and want it in combat against both magical and non-magical enemies you will need to spend the resources to craft it twice, once each for your Steel and Silver swords
- If you enchant any Witcher set gear but then upgrade that gear to a higher tier, the Enchantment will be destroyed in the process freeing up the slots (this does not happen with inset stones).
