Emeralds are green coloured gems. They are technically a variety of the mineral beryl coloured green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Although their colour is admired, they are not as highly prized as some other gems because they are quite brittle. The word "emerald" comes from Latin smaragdus, via Greek smaragdos, its original source being a Semitic word izmargad or the Sanskrit word, marakata, meaning "emerald" or "green".
Ciri's eyes are described as being emerald green.
