Artaud Terranova (d. July 1, 1267) was a mage and member of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers. He was described as a fat, short man with bad breath; and was also a trusted associate of Vilgefortz, working alongside him in the Chapter of the Gift and the Art, the highest ranked of the Brotherhood.[1]

Biography[]

Battle of Sodden Hill[]

In 1263, during the First Northern War, Artaud travelled to Lower Sodden, and fought alongside Vilgefortz and the Brotherhood of Sorcerers against the invading Nilfgaardians, in the famous Battle of Sodden Hill.[2]

Interwar period[]

In 1267, he met with Vilgefortz, Tissaia de Vries and Lydia van Bredevoort, and they discussed the northern rulers meeting in secret at Hagge. While Tissaia asked for Vilgefortz's instruction on what their actions should be, Artaud corrected they only wanted his opinion, as the council would make a decision regardless. Vilgefortz made it clear to him that the council would make no plans; they were to remain as though they knew nothing, as no plans would be set in concrete by the northern kings immediately. Instead he commanded Artaud and Tissaia to contact the court mages around the north via telepathy, and summon them for a conference on the tense situation.[2]

Thanedd coup[]

Later that year in late June, he went to the Grand Mage's Conclave on Thanedd Island with the Chapter, and attended the evening banquet. During the night, a Redanian commando, lead by Sigismund Dijkstra and Keira Metz, arrested and handcuffed him with dimeritium shackles. Keira then punched him in the face with brass knuckles, defacing his nose and his lips. This treatment was applied then to all the other mages accused to cooperate with Nilfgaard. This was the beginning of the so-called Thanedd coup.

Later, things got even worse: all the mages enchained with the dimeritium were freed by Tissaia de Vries. Francesca Findabair then opened the dungeons gate of the palace, letting in a Scoia'tael commando lead by Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach and by Rience, who were waiting for the ambush. Artaud started fighting along-side Vilgefortz, Francesca, Cahir, Rience and the Scoia'tael against Philippa, Triss, Sabrina, and Keira, pushing the latter out of the windows of the palace. After escaping the conflict, he found Ciri, who was secretly infiltrated on the island by Yennefer, and attempted to capture her to sell her to Emhyr. Philippa, while in her owl form, attacked him, scratching with her talons at his eyes. Geralt of Rivia then cut through Artaud's neck with his sword, right under his nape.[1]
